Auto Shipping to US Islands
Something that really doesn’t get talked about much in the auto transport industry is the process of shipping to various islands within the United States. It’s actually something that needs to be addressed, as there are plenty of areas that are considered within U.S. borders that aren’t actually connected to the mainland. A good example is Puget Sound – the northwestern part of Washington State is home to numerous inhabited islands within the area, and getting vehicles to or from those islands presents unique challenges to car shipping companies across the nation. So how do they provide auto shipping to US islands around the country?
Well, typically they’ll ship to the nearest city to the island, so again let’s use Puget Sound. If you’re trying to get a vehicle to Bainbridge Island, typically your auto transport carrier will take the vehicle up to Seattle and drop it off to you somewhere in the city. If you’re shipping to Whidbey Island, a bit further north, Everett may be the destination of choice. To get the vehicle to the island itself, chances are you’re going to have to hop a ferry to the mainland to pick your vehicle up then drive it onto the ferry and have it shipped to the port on the island. There are numerous states with island chains within them including Massachusetts, North and South Carolina, California, and Washington, and there are likely others as well.
Some areas are going to be even more difficult to ship to, but some, like Hawaii, are actually easier since they have access to deepwater harbors that allow international freight into and out of their ports. Hawaii is a good example – as an island state, the only way to get things from the mainland to the island is to ship them via an overseas cargo ship. For a place like Sitka, Alaska, you’re likely going to have to find local shipping services after getting the vehicle to Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau – whichever port your shipper is willing to take it to. Really, auto shipping to US islands is going to depend on where you’re shipping from and to and what kind of access car transporters have to the area.
