Auto Shipping Tips to Akron, Ohio

Akron 1Akron is a city located in north-central Ohio, about an hour or so south of Cleveland. It is the fifth-largest city in the state by population, which sits at just under 12,000 residents, and sits at the center of the Akron Metropolitan Area, which had a population of over 703,000 and spans two counties. Akron is also a part of the larger Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to over 3.5 million residents. Akron is the county seat of Summit County as well, and was founded in 1825. During the early 20th century Akron became a manufacturing powerhouse of northern Ohio, with industries such as stoneware, fishing tackle, farming equipment, matches, toys and rubber products becoming staples of the city’s economy. Unfortunately, deindustrialization during the late 20th century hit Akron hard, and the city fell into a depression that it has only recently begun to emerge from. Akron, however, is emerging as a major player in the information-technology sector; its economy, for years in shambles at the loss of manufacturing, is recovering quickly thanks to new upstart companies in information and technology-related fields, and today Akron is considered one of the top-ten “high-tech havens” in the U.S.

Akron is not the most popular auto shipping destination in the state of Ohio, but it’s located in a fairly populated area, and is relatively easily accessible via the interstate highway system, so it has a few things going for it that can help lower your price. Akron sits about an hour south of Cleveland, and Cleveland can actually be a good alternative if you’re shipping on a budget, need to save some cash, and can afford to drive a bit out of the way. Auto shippers like to run routes into and out of areas that have higher concentrations of potential customers, and Cleveland – which is much larger than Akron in terms of population – is one of the most popular shipping areas in Ohio. Of course, many of the “Rust Belt” cities aren’t as popular in terms of shipping locations as they once were, but many auto transporters still run routes into and out of cities such as Cleveland, Akron and Toledo because there are still quite a few people living in those areas. Akron itself is accessible via I-77, a north-south interstate that runs north to Cleveland, and I-76, an east-west interstate that connects I-71 (northeast-southwest through Columbus, Ohio) and I-80 (east west through Pennsylvania).

When shipping to or from Akron you should keep an eye on the weather reports, as snow tends to fall as early as November and tends to last through the winter and into April. Akron averages over 47 inches of snow per year, with the heaviest snowfalls occurring in December, January and February. Snow can make it difficult for auto shippers to get into and out of certain areas, and even anti-snow measures such as salt and gravel can damage their trucks and cost thousands in repairs. Since auto transport companies prefer more southern routes during the winter months, you will likely see higher prices into and out of Akron during the winter than the summer; not only that, but carrier availability in the area will likely plummet since there won’t be a lot of shippers there during the winter. Many areas of the U.S. tend to see price drops during the winter, as it’s the slow time and carriers take what they can get; however, in Akron and other areas that see a lot of snow, prices can increase due to the lack of popularity and the hazards of winter driving in those areas.
