Auto Shipping Glossary: Junk in the Trunk
The term “junk in the trunk” is hardly something that you would find in a thesaurus or glossary in most industries, but in the car shipping industry the term is actually quite relevant. Normally auto transporters are not licensed to carry household goods – this means that by law you can’t have anything in your vehicle while it is being transported other than things that are a part of the car, particularly in the cab (where the people sit). But plenty of people want to get some stuff shipped along with their car, and so many people do it (and many more just forget about stuff in their trunk) that today the industry has kind of accepted that people are going to put junk in the trunk of their car no matter what anyone else says about the legality of it.
But the buck has to stop somewhere, right? Auto transporters – and really any freight carriers of any industry – are subjected to strict weight restrictions, particularly those that transport across state lines, and if you jam your car full of stuff and that pushes the truck overweight, the authorities are going to have to pull off every single car and search for what’s making the truck overweight (you can thank the wars on Drugs and Terror for that). And when they find it, they’re going to pretty much just pull it out and toss it most like. That’s why we – and everyone else – recommend that you put no more than 100 pounds of stuff in the trunk, and if you can make it as little as possible that’d be best.
