Auto Shipping FAQ: Can I Make My Pickup Window Shorter?
This question is kind of a hard one to answer. If you don’t know, once you book your order your shipping company will find a carrier for you, and once they assign your vehicle to a carrier they will give you a pickup window. On the whole, your pickup window is determined by the route the carrier is running, where you’re shipping from and to and local conditions such as inclement weather and ease of access. Traffic is another big factor in your pickup window, especially traffic conditions on the way into your pickup area. This is a major reason why carriers give pickup windows instead of pickup days, as they cannot always guarantee when they will arrive to pick your vehicle up.
If you need your vehicle picked up more quickly, there are a few tactics you can try. One of the most common is to physically move your vehicle to a more convenient location along the carrier’s route. This tactic doesn’t always work, but you won’t know unless you ask, and the best way to go about finding out is to actually talk to the driver of the transport truck directly. When your vehicle is dispatched, your car shipping representative should give you your carrier’s contact information precisely for discussing pickup and delivery details. You shouldn’t berate your carrier with phone calls; one or two should do it.
When you call them, be prepared to wait for them to call you back. Oftentimes carriers will have voice mailboxes they will check when they are done driving for the day, so if you don’t get a hold of them immediately make sure to leave a message. Once you get a hold of the driver, you can discuss possibly moving your pickup or delivery location to somewhere that is more easily accessible or closer to them if you need to have your vehicle picked up more quickly. Sometimes it just won’t be feasible, though, so you’ll want to discuss it with your shipper at your earliest convenience, or else you’ll be stuck waiting for your originally given pickup window.
