Auto Shipping FAQ: What is the Easiest Way to Pay for My Shipment?
We’ve only discussed payment methods and options in our Auto Shipping FAQ series once before, and in that post we discussed the different (common) methods that auto shippers provide to their customers. But we haven’t discussed much about how the payments are divvied up – remember, there are actually two different auto transport companies you will be working with. You book your order with your broker, who finds a car transport carrier to actually haul it for you. Most times you ship, your broker will take their payment, known as a deposit, and you will pay the rest of the balance to the carrier upon delivery of your vehicle.
This is the most common way that car transport companies divide their payments and the fastest, easiest and most convenient way for most customers and most shippers. However, there are other ways to pay, notably prepay. A prepaid shipment is when you pay the entire balance – both the deposit and the carrier price – when you book your order. Prepaid shipments are fairly rare because car transport carriers really don’t want to have to wait for the broker they contracted with to send them their money, which can take weeks or even months depending on the reputation of the broker. It is also for that reason that many carriers try to avoid prepaid shipments if they can, which leads to longer waiting times for pickup.
What we’re saying is that paying a deposit when you book your order or upon dispatch or pickup will almost always lead to faster pickup and transportation services than a prepaid shipment, making it by far the easiest way to pay for your vehicle shipment. What’s nice is that most auto transport brokers will work with their customers to make sure they get the services they need. This goes beyond just doing their job; many companies will work with you to allow you to pay your deposit price in other ways than a credit card, if you need, and will also work with you in regards to your timetable and your scheduling and budget – within reason, of course.
