Auto Shipping FAQ: Can Car Shippers Carry Household Items?
There are a number of different transportation industries out there, each of which hauls different types of goods. There are carriers that only handle hazardous materials, carriers that only haul logs or non-perishable foodstuffs, carriers that transport household items and cars and much more. Each different transportation industry has different rules to follow because of the cargo that they haul; for instance, a truck that hauls chickens around is not equipped to handle liquid nitrogen, and if they tried to switch cargo the results would be disastrous (albeit hilarious), so different rules govern different types of cargo.
When shipping a vehicle, you need to be aware that auto transport carriers are only licensed to haul automobiles, and not household items. Some companies may be able to broker the transportation of both vehicles and household items, but these companies are rare, and most of the time simply have business agreements with other companies in other industries that refer customers to them who ask. This is more common than you’d think, but it’s rare that a company will be able to handle shipping both vehicles and household items, so unless they refer you to someone else it’s best to do different searches for your different goods.
A lot of customers ask if they can put household items in a vehicle that an auto transport company will be shipping, so many that we’ve actually covered it in this series before. At the end of the day, auto shippers are not licensed to carry household items, just like a poultry trucker is not licensed to haul liquid nitrogen. There are a lot of differences between transporting household items and transporting a vehicle, and aside from requiring different licenses and different training, putting household items into a vehicle to be shipped can push it overweight, which can cause delays and leave your goods sitting on the side of the road next to a weigh station in the middle of the country. Don’t let that happen to you; if you have further questions about it, talk to your auto transport agent.
