York is a city in and the county seat of York County, Pennsylvania, and it is known as the White Rose City. Its nickname stems from the House of York, which was a member of the War of the Roses between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the city’s population was over 40,000.

York was founded in 1741 by settlers looking for a new home and the city grew rapidly during the latter half of the 18th century. It was incorporated as a borough in 1787 and, in the same year, reincorporated as a city. From 1800-1840 York ranked in the nations top 100 urban centers, though population growth slowed and eventually leveled off in middle of the 20th century.
