Yazoo City is a city in and the county seat of Yazoo County, Mississippi and was actually named after the Yazoo River, which in turn is a native word for “River of Death,” though the river is fairly safe. Yazoo City is the principal city in the Yazoo City Micropolitan Statistical Area and the population of the city was over 14,000 at the time of the 2000 US Census.

It was founded in 1824 and was originally named Hannan’s Bluff before being changed to Manchester and then Yazoo City in 1839. It became the county seat in 1849, and in 1904 a fire destroyed much of the city’s downtown area. It has been rebuilt, however, and is known for being the birthplace of several major jazz and blues musicians.
