Yakima is a city in and the county seat of Yakima County, Washington, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city is over 71,000. It is the principal city of the Yakima Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of over 234,000.

It was founded as a Catholic mission in 1847 and was the major site of the Yakima Indian War of 1855, which prompted the US Government to build Fort Simcoe in 1856. The city was actually in a different location than it is today; when it was passed by the Northern Pacific Railroad, the residents actually literally moved the town nearer to the railroad, which helped the city to grow in population. The old city and what was left of it was renamed Union Gap in 1918.
