Winston-Salem is a city in and the county seat of Forsyth County, North Carolina, and according to an official estimate conducted by the US Census Bureau in 2008 it had a population of over 225,000. Winston-Salem began life as two separate towns that were combined in the late 19th century. Winston was named after Joseph Winston, a Revolutionary War hero, while Salem was founded by Moravian settlers. The two towns were growing rapidly, and due to their proximity were combined into one by the United States Post Office.
