Wilkes-Barre is a city in and the county seat of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was 43,000, and it is currently a principal city of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of over 549,000 in 2007.

It began in the late 1700’s by settlers from Connecticut who were in contention with the colony of Pennsylvania. The small conflict was resolved after the American Revolution and Wilkes-Barre became a major mining city after anthracite coal was discovered in the early 19th century.

However, the city’s mining has declined after World War II, though today it is known mainly for its service-based economy as opposed to mining and manufacturing.
