Walla Walla is a city in and the county seat of Walla Walla County, Washington, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 28,000. It is the home to Whitman College and Walla Walla Community College, as well as the Washington State Penitentiary, and it is also the largest city in Walla Walla County.

It was founded by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman in 1836; they were missionaries who had come to the area to convert the Walla Walla tribe to Christianity. Their efforts failed, though Whitman College is named in their honor, and Walla Walla became a major trading post for settlers crossing the Rocky Mountains.
