Waco is a city in and also the county seat of McLennan County, Texas, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 122,000. More recently, the 2010 US Census placed the city’s population at 129,000. It is the 26th largest city in the state and was the site of the grizzly Waco Siege in 1993, where ATF agents laid siege to David Koresh’s compound. Waco is also the principal city of the Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to a population of over 259,000 residents.

The City of Waco was founded in 1838 on the South Bosque River, and at the time was supported mostly by farming and other agricultural endeavors. During the early 20th century, small manufacturing had grown in the city, though it played a minor role until about the 1980’s, when Waco emerged as a major commercial and educational center in the region. Today, Waco continues to be a major manufacturing hub in the region and its economy has diversified greatly over the past forty years; retail, manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and other types of services are all part of the city’s overall economic makeup.

During the summer months, average highs in Waco tend to reach up into the low 90’s during the day, while overnight lows usually fall down into the low-to-mid 70’s. Temperatures in triple digits are not unheard, but aren’t exactly common in the area. During the winter months, lower temperatures are to be expected; average highs only reach into the mid-to-upper 50’s, while overnight lows usually drop down to around freezing. While these may seem low for a city in Texas, it is fairly mild year-round despite what the averages tend to be.
