The town was originally known as Gum Pond, purportedly because of the high number of tupelo trees (also known as Blackgum). It was renamed after the Civil War to Tupelo, the name of a small-scale battle that took place in the area. Because of its location (and the fact that several major rail lines pass through the city), Tupelo\’s industrial sector grew, brining more people and increasing the population. It was also the first city to be electrified by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the early 1930\’s.

The city lies in a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Typically temperatures during the summer months hover around 90 degrees, with lows dipping around 70; in the winter, however, the temperature rarely exceeds 60 degrees, while lows dip down to around 38.
