It was settled in the mid 1800’s and was prone to native attacks until Colonel John Sevier came to the area to secure it. The city was named after him because of his efforts in securing the area and, unlike many of its neighbors, took a strong anti-Confederate stance during the Civil War. Today the city is known for its service-based economy, as opposed to manufacturing and the area has seen slow -but continuous – growth.

During the summer months the city’s temperatures hit around 85 degrees during the day with overnight lows often dropping to around 52 degrees. During the winter, however, temperatures drop sharply, with highs often topping out around 65 degrees during the day and lows dropping to around 30 degrees overnight.
