It is the principal city of the Santa Fe Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a part of the much larger Santa Fe-Espanola Combined Statistical Area.

It was founded by the Spanish in the late 16th century though it wasn’t officially formed until sometime in 1608. It was named the capital of Nuevo Mexico and became a part of the United States in 1848. It was originally designed to be a small stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and was named the capital of New Mexico in 1912.
