San Marcos is a city in San Diego County, California, and according to the official U.S. Census, conducted in 2000, the population of the city was over 83,700.  It is probably best known outside of the San Diego Area for being the home of California State University, San Marcos. Today, San Marcos is a part of the larger San Diego Metropolitan Statistical Area, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the state of California and home to over three million residents.

The city was founded in the late 1850’s as a small area where wine and honey were produced in addition to other agricultural crops such as wheat. The city began to grow when the Santa Fe Railroad decided to build a train station in the area, and it began growing slowly on the back of the agricultural community that had developed since before the railroad’s arrival. After the end of World War II, and the start of the post-war boom, San Marcos experienced a period of rapid growth, though the largest period of expansion was between 1990 and 2000, where the population exploded from 33,800 to 82,743.

During the summer months, average daily highs rarely get into the 90’s due to the Pacific Ocean and its effects on the local climate. Overnight lows tend to be fairly mild, with highs usually in the low-to-mid 60’s. During the winter months the weather remains fairly mild, with average highs usually topping out in the low-to-mid 60’s and overnight lows usually dropping into the upper 40’s and lower 50’s.
