It was the first capital of the state from 1821 to 1826 and was also the last stop for Lewis and Clark before they began their journey into the Louisiana Territory. Its history is relatively linear, however, with manufacturing and agriculture making up most of the economic sector until the 1970’s, when new, high-tech businesses came in and helped the city expand.
