The first permanent settlement, settled by Europeans, was established in 1815 when Louis Campau established a trading post along the banks of the Saginaw River, and shortly thereafter the United States established Fort Saginaw in the same location. Around the turn of the 20th century the city was dominated by the automotive and manufacturing sectors, and immigration to the city was on the rise. However, in recent years and with the downturn of the economy, factories have shut down and people have been put out of work, increasing the crime rate in the city.

The city lies in a continental climate, which is influenced heavily by the Great Lakes. Summers are typically warm, with temperatures rarely getting above 85 degrees, while lows typically don’t fall below 60. However, during the winter, temperatures are extremely cold, with average highs just above freezing, and lows dipping down to around 20. Snowfall is common in the city during the winter months.
