Richmond is a city in and the county seat of Madison County, Kentucky. It is actually named after Richmond, Virginia and is also the home of Eastern Kentucky University. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the city’s population was over 30,000, and currently Richmond is the sixth largest city in Kentucky. It is a principal city of the Richmond-Berea Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Madison and Rockcastle Counties.

Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller, a hero of the American Revolution and the city became the county seat of the newly formed Madison County that same year. The city stole the county seat from nearby Milford, which was the previous county seat, and residents were so upset that they challenged Richmond to a duel.
