Poughkeepsie is a city in and the county seat of Duchess County, New York, located in the Hudson River Valley. It was founded in 1687 by a Dutch explorer by the name of Baltus Barent van Kleeck, who built the first house in the future location of the city in 1702. A town quickly grew around it, and it served as the meeting place for the delegates of New York State to meet and ratify the new United States Constitution in 1788. It was a major center for whaling and industry, and continues in this trend today.
