Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 57,000, though the most recent Census Bureau data puts the population of Port Arthur at just 53,800, which while not a major decline is still noticeable. Port Arthur is a principal city of the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area, which sits at about 403,000 total residents.
Port Arthur was first founded in 1837, though the idea to found a new port city in Texas had been hatched several years before. First known as Sparks, after John Sparks, and then was renamed Aurora not long after. The town of Aurora was never incorporated, and by 1895 was a ghost town; much of the area’s abandonment is attributed to the destruction of vital rail lines during the American Civil War, and the lack of reconstruction in the region. By 1898, though, things seem to have smoothed over, and the newly-founded Port Arthur was incorporated at the old site of Aurora that same year.
Summer temperatures in Port Arthur tend to hover in the low-to-mid 90’s during the day, while overnight lows in the season tend to fall down into the low-to-mid 70’s. During the winter months, temperatures drop rather sharply; daily highs only reach into the lower 60’s on average, while overnight lows tend to fall down into the low 40’s. Snow, however, is rather uncommon; this makes auto transport to or from Port Arthur, and indeed many cities in the South, that much easier and cheaper to get to and from during the slowest season for the industry.
