Napa is a city in and is also the county seat of Napa County, California. Home to over 76,900 residents, Napa is the 100th largest city in the state of California – in most other states it would likely count in the top 10 in total population, which just shows how many large cities are in California. Napa also sits as the principal city of the Napa Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Napa County and is 136,500 residents.
The city was founded in 1847 and became one of the original counties of California in the early 1850’s, after counties were organized once California was admitted to the union. By the turn of the 20th century, Napa had become the primary economic and business center for the entire Napa Valley; over time, however, its influenced on the rest of the area has waned in some respects, and today Napa Valley is perhaps most famous for its wine production.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Napa only reach into the low-to-mid 80’s during the day, which is perfect for wine-making – which the city is famous for. Overnight, lows tend to drop down into the mid 50’s. During the winter months temperatures can get a bit chilly, though during the day highs usually reach into the upper 50’s and lower 60’s, while overnight lows can drop down into the upper 30’s. Though rare, temperatures below freezing in Napa have been recorded.
