Muskegon is a city in and the county seat of Muskegon County, Michigan, and according to the 2000 US Census the city had a population of over 40,000 residents. It is a principal city of the Muskegon-Norton Shores Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is actually a part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland Combined Statistical Area.

The city was founded in 1679 by French soldiers, though it didn’t actually grow any until fur traders setup a small trading outpost in the region. It remained a small area until around 1790, when the United States finally decided to open the west and in the 1830’s the lumber industry began to boom. Today, the city still relies heavily on the timber industry, which is the largest component of the economy of the city.
