Midland is a city in and also serves as the county seat of Midland County, Texas, though a small portion of the city extends into Martin County. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 94,000, though that number has jumped to 111,000 as of the 2010 U.S. Census and 123,000 as of the most recent census estimates. Midland is currently the principal city of the Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is in turn a part of the much larger Midland-Odessa Combined Statistical Area and has a population of over 151,000 in the metro area and 296,000 in the combined statistical area.
Midland was originally known as Midway, due to its location between El Paso and Forth Worth. It was renamed to Midland because of early confusion between it and other cities named Midway that were in the state, which were numerous at the time. After its founding, Midland transformed into a small farming town; this would change in 1923 when oil was found and the city changed to accommodate the new industry that was beginning to flourish. Today, oil and petroleum is one of the largest sectors of the city’s economy.
During the summer months the temperatures of the city typically reach into the low-to-mid 90’s during the day, with overnight lows often dropping down into the upper 60’s. During the winter months, however, temperatures typically only reach into the low-to-mid 50’s, while overnight lows routinely fall down into the freezing range. Snow and other winter weather is usually uncommon, due to its geographical location, though it is not unheard of to see freezing rain or light flurries during the depths of the cold season.
