Madera is a city in and also the county seat of Madera County, California. It is the principal city of the Madera-Chowchilla Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Madera County and the surrounding area. According to a recent US Census estimate conducted in early 2009, the city’s population sat at around 61,000. Madera may anchor its own small metropolitan area, but it is still a part of the larger Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Statistical Area, known as Greater Fresno, which is home to over one million residents.

The term “madera” is Spanish for lumber, and Madera itself was originally a rather important lumber area in the Fresno area. For over 50 years the area served much of the region’s lumber needs, though over time of course the lumber industry has all but left Madera, leaving instead a more diverse economy based on retail, healthcare and other service-based industries. Madera’s first post office opened in 1877, and the town was incorporated in 1907.

During the summer months, average daily highs in Madera can get pretty high – usually into the low-to-mid 90’s, though higher temperatures aren’t exactly uncommon. Night time tends to bring cooler weather, with average overnight lows dropping into the low-to-mid 60’s. Winter brings yet cooler temperatures, with average highs only reaching into the mid-to-upper 50’s and overnight lows dropping down into the low 40’s.
