Laredo is a city in and the county seat of Webb County, Texas, and according to the official US Census estimate conducted in 2007 the population of the city was over 217,000, though the 2010 official U.S. Census placed the population of Laredo at over 236,000, making it the tenth-largest city in the state of Texas. It is also the largest inland port in the United States, which is a major reason for its size, and the economy is mostly based off international trade, primarily with Mexico.

Laredo was founded in 1755 by the Spanish and, somewhat interestingly, the area declared independence from Mexico in 1840, well before talks of annexation of the entire area of Texas by the U.S. had even started. Laredo for a time was completely independent, one of the few cities in the United States that can stake that claim; it did not last, though, as in 1846 Laredo was reunited with Mexico, only to be ceded to the United States a few years later along with the rest of Texas. During the 20th century the city continued to expand thanks to trade with Mexico and today is one of the largest cities dealing with trade to and from Mexico.
