The city was first founded in 1781 by two French explorers, with slow but steady growth up until the outbreak of the Civil War. Just before the war, there was a brief economic boom, caused mainly by new manufacturing techniques being introduced in the city, and was one of the only cities in the South that had fewer slaves than non-slaves in its population. After the war manufacturing became the leading source of income to the city, and to this day it is still one of the top manufacturing cities in the nation.
