Jacksonville is a city in Cherokee County, Texas. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 14,500, and it is currently a principal city of the Jacksonville Micropolitan Statistical Area. Jacksonville is known for its tomato production, and is colloquially known as “The Tomato Capital of the World.”

Not to be confused with Jacksonville, Florida or Jacksonville, North Carolina, Jacksonville, Texas was founded in 1847 and was originally known as Gum Creek. The post office came to the area in 1848 and the town was renamed Jacksonville not long afterwards. The name was changed not to honor former President Andrew Jackson, but rather one Dr. William Jackson, who’s influence and help resulted in substantial growth of the town, and essentially changed the town from a small village into a major industrial and agricultural center in the region. Today, Jacksonville is the home of two separate private colleges: Lon Morris College and Jacksonville College, which give the city a more college-town type of atmosphere.

During the summer months Jacksonville, like many cities in Texas, experiences relatively high temperatures, usually in the low-to-mid 90’s but temperatures of 100 degrees and higher have been recorded. Overnight lows often drop down into the high 60’s and low 70’s. During the winter months, daily temperatures tend to fall, with average highs only reaching into the low 70’s and overnight lows often dropping down into the low-to-mid 40’s. Snow, thankfully, is uncommon, though this is actually the norm in Texas.
