Houma is the parish seat of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, and is the largest principal city of the Houma–Bayou Cane–Thibodaux Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2000, the population of the city was just over 33,000, and the city itself derives its name from the Houmas Indian Tribe, but this is not recognized by the US Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Houma was founded in 1810 by settlers looking for a new life in the swamps of Louisiana, and was incorporated in 1848 as Houma. The city is known for its Cajun influences, and throughout the 20th century the city grew into the city it is known as today.
