Hickory is a city in Catawba County, North Carolina, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was about 37,000. It is the principal city of the Hickory Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of over 341,000, making it the fourth largest metropolitan area in the state and the 162nd largest in the United States.

It was founded in the mid 19th century by Henry Robinson; he had built a tavern in the shade of a giant hickory tree, which ended up giving the town its name. It was known as Hickory Tavern when it was founded, though by 1873 the “Tavern” portion had been dropped, and growth in the city has been slow.
