Georgetown was first laid out in 1729 and became a major trading post among local Native American tribes. As indigo became a major cash crop, however, trade with the locals faded away and indigo became the major industry in the area, with rice a close second. During the Great Depression, however, indigo and rice crops failed thanks to disrupted labor patterns and inclement weather, but today the city is known for its tourism.
