Elkhart is a city in and the county seat of Elkhart County, Indiana. It is a principal city in the Elkhart-Goshen Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a part of the larger South Bend-Elkhart-Mishawaka Combined Statistical Area and according to the official US Census taken in 2000 the city’s population was over 52,000.

It was founded in the early 19th century, though it wouldn’t be until 1839 that the original name (which is now lost) was changed to Elkhart. It is known for its many musical instrument factories, the Miles Medical Company and other, smaller mills that were the base of the economy before the outbreak of World War II. Today the mills are mostly closed, though manufacturing is still a major part of the city.
