The city was first founded in 1797 as a fort designed to defend against Native American attacks. At the time, there were three separate forts built in a one-mile radius of each other, and in the middle of these three forts a small town began to prosper and grow. Because of the lack of settlements in the area, people naturally migrated to the area, and today the city is still growing.
