Corpus Christi is a coastal city in the state of Texas and is the county seat for Nueces County. Its population as of the 2007 July estimates was over 316,000, which currently makes it the eighth-largest city in the state of Texas. The Corpus Christi Metropolitan Statistical Area, which in turn is part of the larger Corpus Christi-Kingsville Combined Statistical Area, which includes all of Nueces County, is home to over 442,600 residents. Corpus Christi is a major port city in eastern Texas – the Port of Corpus Christi is the fifth-largest in the United States.
Corpus Christi has long been a port town, and grew on the back of manufacturing and shipping, two components of its economy that are still vital today. Though manufacturing has seen its ups and downs, Corpus Christi today is known for both its tourism and its shipping, as it is located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Many goods and services come into Corpus Christi’s various ports, and exports of its manufactured goods (such as textiles and steel) are an integral part of the city’s economy. Corpus Christi, like many cities at the time, fell on hard times during the 70’s and 80’s, though renewed interest in urban renewal and redevelopment of run-down areas has resulted in a region-wide beautification effort that has seen Corpus Christi blossom since the turn of the 21st century.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Corpus Christi only reach into the low-to-mid 90’s. Unlike more inland cities, Corpus Christi feels the effects of the Gulf of Mexico, which help to moderate the temperatures and keep them a bit cooler. Daily breezes are common and give the city a warm-but-not-too-hot feeling, and many times it is refreshing. Overnight summer lows often drop into the low-to-mid 70’s, and during the winter average highs usually hover in the mid-to-upper 40’s while dropping down into the low-to-mid 30;s overnight. Snow, however, is uncommon in Corpus Christi, and like most the rest of the state is easy for carriers to get to and from and quite popular in terms of being a shipping destination.
