Columbia is a city in and the county seat of Maury County, Tennessee, and according to the official US Census taken in 2000 the city’s population was just over 33,000. Columbia is known as the “Mule Capital of the World” and actually holds its own “Mule Day,” which is a large celebration held each year in April. Columbia was founded in 1808, just one year after Maury County was organized, and for years the city was the county seat of the richest agricultural county in the state. Today it is a much larger tourist destination, thanks mainly to its many historic sites. It is probably best known for being the birthplace of President James K.
