Carlisle is a borough in and is also the county seat of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, which is just 18 miles west of Harrisburg. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the borough’s population was over 17,000 and it is the smaller principal city of the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.

Carlisle was laid out and settled by immigrants from Scotland and Ireland in 1751 and became the primary settlement in the Cumberland Valley until around the turn of the 19th century. It was a major part of Lee’s Gettysburg campaign during the Civil war and is now the home of a US Army War College, which caters to high-level military personnel and prepares them for strategic leadership and its responsibilities.
