The city was incorporated in 1828 and was created from portions of defunct Newton Township while it was then a part of Gloucester County. It then became the county seat of Camden County in 1844 and served as the areas major economic and transportation hub behind Philadelphia. It was known for its extensive rail lines that served Philadelphia and was actually a suburb of Philadelphia until the mid 20th century when it grew into its own separate city.
