Brownsville is a city in and the county seat of Cameron County, Texas, and is currently home to over 181,000 residents. Brownsville is currently the sixteenth-largest city in the state of Texas and is also the 130th largest city in the United States. Brownsville is the principal city of the Brownsville-Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a part of the larger Brownsville-Harlingen-Raymondville Combined Statistical Area; the former has a population of over 417,000, making it the eighth-largest metro area in the state of Texas.

Brownsville was established in 1848 and became the county seat of the newly formed Cameron County in 1849, and was used as a major smuggling point for Confederate goods going into Mexico – most notably cotton. The city has grown slowly but surely during the 20th century and was actually named as an All-American City in 2001, though in recent years poverty has been a problem that city leaders have been trying to address. City beautification is at an all-time high, however, which is helping in that regard.

During the summer months the city’s temperatures tend to reach into the low-to-mid 90’s during the day on average, with lows often dropping down into the low-to-mid 70’s overnight. During the winter months, however, average highs drop down into the mid-to-upper 60’s during the day, with lows often dropping down into the low 50’s overnight. Brownsville, located at the southern tip of Texas, sees a lot of its weather patterns affects by the Gulf of Mexico.
