Yonkers is a city located in Westchester County, New York, within the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is currently the largest city in the county and the fourth-largest in the state, behind New York City, Buffalo and Rochester. Yonkers borders the Bronx, one of New York City’s five boroughs, and sits just a few miles from Manhattan and the main commercial districts of New York City proper. Yonkers is sometimes considered to be New York’s “sixth borough,” and at one point was considering becoming a part of the city itself, before voters decided to remain independent in 1894, when most of the counties surrounding New York City – with the notable exceptions of Yonkers and Mount Vernon – decided to become part of the city itself.
Yonkers has been settled by Europeans since 1646, and was primarily a rural farming community on the outskirts of burgeoning New York City. When the Industrial Revolution started, Yonkers saw increased industrial activity along its waterfront, and by the turn of the 20th century had become a minor industrial producer in the New York metropolitan area. Notable industrial innovations out of Yonkers include Bakelite, the first completely synthetic plastic, which was discovered in 1906 and manufactured in Yonkers until the 1920’s. Today, Yonkers has eschewed much of its manufacturing base for a more diverse service-based economy, with retail being the main supporter of the city’s economic health today.
Yonkers’ climate closely mirrors that of New York City due to its proximity, which features a humid subtropical climate characters by warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Average highs in the summer top out in the mid-to-upper 80’s, while overnight summer lows tend to fall into the mid-to-upper 60’s. Unlike New York City, Yonkers doesn’t suffer from a severe urban heat effect, which means snows that fall in the urban areas of Yonkers accumulate more than in New York, which can cause delays in shipping due to the hazardous conditions. That said, snow falls fairly sparsely, since average highs in the winter are usually in the upper 30’s to low 40’s, though overnight snow can accumulate since temperatures tend to drop down into the mid-to-upper 20’s.
