Stamford is the third-largest city in the state of Connecticut, home to over 125,000 residents, and is the second-largest city in the county after Bridgeport. Stamford is part of the Greater New York City Metropolitan Area, and for years was a manufacturing center in the area, though during the 196’s and 70’s many of its factories either shut down or moved somewhere else. The city decided to promote itself as more business-friendly, lowering taxes and allowing larger corporations to open regional, national or worldwide headquarters in the city limits. Today, Stamford is home to four Fortune 500 companies and nine Fortune 1000 companies, giving Stamford the largest financial district in the New York Metro Area outside of New York City itself.
Stamford was officially established in 1640, and is situated just thirty miles north of Manhattan. Its proximity to New York City allowed it to become a manufacturing hub of the area, frequently shipping goods down to New York to be shipped on to other areas. Incorporated in 1893, Stamford by that time was a vacation destination for wealthy New Yorkers who wanted away from the city, and even today there are people who live in Stamford and commute to New York City via either personal vehicle or public transportation. Today, Stamford is in the process of revitalizing its old Harbor Point district, extending the downtown area and adding numerous new retail and residential space for its citizens.
During the summer months, average highs usually get into the low-to-mid 80’s, with overnight lows typically dropping into the lower 60’s. During the summer months, though, is when auto transportation prices and services can be severely affected; during the day average winter temperatures only get into the upper 80’s or, at most, the low 40’s, while overnight lows typically drop down into the teens. Stamford averages six inches of snow per month between December and March, which can cause delays for auto transportation due to the severe weather and the difficulty that many long-haul commercial truckers have while operating in those kinds of conditions.
