South Portland is a city located in Cumberland County, Maine, and is currently home to over 25,000 residents. South Portland is a principal city of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area, the largest metro area in the state of Maine. South Portland is currently the fourth-largest city in the entire state and the city today is a major retail and shipping area, due to its location on Portland Harbor and greater Casco Bay. South Portland has links via air, rail, road, and marine to many, many areas of the world; this has allowed South Portland to continue to grow and thrive with a vibrant and diverse economy, despite its size.

Contrary to popular belief, South Portland was never a part of Portland itself; instead, it was originally a part of nearby Cape Elizabeth, at least up until 1895, when residents decided to secede from the city and instead become their own. The move was accepted, and South Portland was officially established late in 1895; it would be incorporated as a city in 1898. One of the biggest reasons for its split from Cape Elizabeth is actually because of drinking water; residents of what would become South Portland wanted their drinking water to come from Sebago Lake, like residents of Portland, while Cape Elizabeth had mainly private wells; this conflict did not lead to violence, only a parting of the ways. The split allowed South Portland to continue to grow and mature, and it is likely because of its incorporation that the area began to attract businesses while the port continued to grow.

Situated just across the Fore River from greater Portland, it is not surprising that South Portland would share much of the same climate as its larger neighbor. During the summer months, average daily highs in South Portland only reach into the upper 70’s and low 80’s, though temperatures as high as 103 have been recorded (though they are rare). Overnight lows usually fall down into the upper 50’s and low 60’s. During the winter months is when the winter weather comes in full force; average winter highs only get into the low-to-mid 30’s, while overnight temperatures usually drop down into the low-to-mid teens. Snowfall is quite common in South Portland during the winter, with average accumulation sitting at about a foot per month.
