Smyrna is a town in New Castle County, Delaware, with parts located in neighboring Kent County. Home to over 10,000 residents, it is the fifth-largest city in the state and located squarely within the Dover, Delaware metropolitan area. The city has a rather large historic district, composed of over 820 buildings in the downtown and surrounding areas – many of those buildings pre-date the turn of the 20th century. Smyrna is rather racially diverse for a town its size; only 72% of residents declare themselves “white,” which is only slightly higher than the statewide average of 69%.

Demographically, the median income for a household in Smyrna was just over $36,000, while the median income for a family was over $42,000. Per capita income in the town was just over $17,000, a little lower than statewide averages. Only 8% of families and 10% of the population was below the poverty line; however, in a town of 10,000 residents, this actually accounts for more people than you may think. Smyrna is far from the richest city in the state of Delaware, though its location close to Dover helps economically.

Being so close to Dover, Smyrna’s climate mirrors that of its larger neighbor. During the summer months, average daily highs in the city can reach into the upper 80’s, with some days reaching into the low 90’s, though overnight lows tend to fall into the mid-to-upper 60’s on average. Daily highs in the winter months are a lot lower, averaging in the mid-to-upper 40’s; overnight lows, on the other hand, often drop below freezing, with average overnight lows hovering in the mid 20’s and sometimes dropping even lower.
