Paterson is a city in as well as the county seat of Passaic County, New Jersey. Home to over 145,000 residents, Paterson is the third-largest city in the state and one of the larger cities of the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area, also known as the New York metro area. Paterson has one of the highest population densities for a city of over 100,000, second only to New York City and also has one of the highest rates of ethnic diversity in the U.S. as Paterson is a popular first-stop for many people emigrating to the United States for other countries.
Paterson was established in 1791 as an industrial venture, namely to harness the power of the Great Falls of the Passaic River; soon after, Paterson emerged as the largest industrial center in the United States and a cornerstone of the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. Many of the industries that grew in Paterson grew on the back of the falls, and the energy they provided; at this time, Paterson gained a reputation for silk manufacturing, which earned it the nickname “Silk City.” Its industrial power continued well into the 20th century, but began to wane after the end of World War II and by the turn of the 20th century Paterson had seen a major population decline from which the city is still recovering.
During the summer months, average daily highs, like many cities in the New York metro area, tend to reach into the mid-to-upper 80’s, and days are generally hot and humid. Temperatures cool overnight, but only down into the mid-to-upper 60’s, and the urban heat effect in the area makes some parts of the city, particularly downtown, much warmer than the temperature may make it seem. During the winter months, average highs tend to reach into the high 30’s, while overnight lows drop down into the mid-to-upper 20’s. Snow is not entirely uncommon, but it doesn’t get blanketed every winter. Still, winter shipping can be more difficult, since snow is rather unpredictable, so keep an eye on the weather in Paterson if you’re shipping in or out of the area.
