Newark is a city in as well as the county seat of Essex County, New Jersey, and, with a population of over 277,000 residents, is the largest city in the entire state of New Jersey. It is a part of the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the second-largest city within it, and is home to the Port of Newark, which is the largest on the east coast. Newark is also the home of the Newark Liberty International Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the United States.
Originally founded in 1666 by Puritan colonists, it remained a relatively small and rural area until the start of the Industrial Revolution. By the mid-19th century, Newark had transformed into a major industrial powerhouse in the New York Metro Area by the turn of the 20th century, and saw some of its greatest days during the early part of the 20th century. Newark saw significant decline and deindustrialization during the latter half of the 20th century, though the city’s leadership has stopped the decline in recent years and has actively been working on revitalizing the city.
