Morgantown is a city in as well as the county seat of Monongalia County, West Virginia. Home to a population of over 29,600 residents, Morgantown is the principal city of the Morgantown Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the largest city in north-central West Virginia. Morgantown’s economy is based heavily on retail, tourism and education, and is the home of West Virginia University. The University is one of the driving forces behind Morgantown’s economy as well as its recent growth in population, and gives the city a “college town” atmosphere.

Morgantown was founded around 1772, though settlers first attempted to move into the Morgantown area as early as the 1760’s, which resulted in numerous conflicts with the local Native Americans. Several forts were constructed in the area to protect settlers, and by the turn of the 19th century Morgantown was a small community in the northern part of what was then the state of Virginia. Incorporated in 1838, Morgantown grew into a small agricultural community that remained that way until West Virginia University was opened to the public. The university transformed the city and has been an influential part of its growth and history even today.

During the summer months, average daily highs in Morgantown generally reach into the low-to-mid 80’s with overnight lows often dropping down into the low-to-mid 60’s. The winter months is when Morgantown can be a real pain to get into and out of for auto transport drivers because temperatures drop severely; highs only reach into the upper 30’s and lower 40’s while overnight lows tend to fall into the low-20’s. This usually results in heavy snows, though some years are lighter than others. Nonetheless, Morgantown’s location in north-central West Virginia, the climate, and the lack of major interstate access all make it more difficult – and more expensive – to ship into or out of Morgantown. Not impossible, by any means, just more difficult.
