Kaneohe is a census-designated place on the northeastern shores of Oahu Island, Hawaii. It is a part of the City and County of Honolulu, though realistically its distance from the largest city on the island makes it more independent than one might think. Kaneohe, historically, has been an important agricultural area; its fertile soil, heavy rains and location make it a prime area to grow a variety of crops including pineapples and sugarcane. However, though it was historically used as farmland, today much of the area is residential, with the only commercial crop still grown in the city being bananas. Kaneohe is home to over 34,000 residents, and is a major supply city for the servicemen and women at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, which is located just southeast of Kaneohe and actually borders the city proper.
Kaneohe literally means “bamboo man” in the Hawaiian language, and stems from an ancient Hawaiian story about a local woman who compared her husband’s cruelty with the sharp cutting edge of the bamboo stalk; therefore, the area was named Kaneohe, though the actual spelling in Hawaiian has a few more random apostrophes than we’d like to add. It is the oldest of several communities located on Kaneohe Bay and, along with Kailua, is one of the two largest residential communities on the windward side of Oahu.
During the summer months average temperatures during the day tend to stay in the upper 80’s, with overnight lows dropping into the low-to-mid 70’s. During the winter months, average highs still get into the 80’s, but they tend to stay near the lower digits. Winter lows drop down into the upper 60’s and low 70’s. This moderate climate is pretty standard throughout the island chain, as well as the rain; the island of Oahu, on average, sees about seven days of rain per month. However, snow is never to be seen except at the highest elevations, and even then is rare.
