Joliet is a city located in both Will and Kendall Counties, in the U.S. state of Illinois, and is the current county seat of Will County. Joliet is the fourth-largest city in the state of Illinois by population and is currently home to over 147,000 residents. Joliet is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area, located only minutes southwest of the city proper. When the city was first founded in the 1830’s it was originally supposed to be part of Cook County, but when the county lines were redrawn it was placed in Will County and was eventually given the county seat. Joliet has been and remains the fastest-growing city in the state of Illinois and the Chicago metropolitan area.
As mentioned, Joliet was founded in the 1830’s following the end of the Black Hawk War. Named after an old French explorer who mapped the area around Joliet in the 17th century, the city was first planned and plotted as early as 1834, after Charles Reed built what is considered to be the first building in the area along the Des Plaines River. Though incorporated as a village in the late 1830’s, it asked the state government to rescind the title due to budgetary concerns during the Depression of 1837, and was reincorporated in 1845 after things had stabilized. Today, Joliet is a retail power and prominent suburb of the Chicago metropolitan area.
During the summer months, average highs in the city tend to reach into the low-to-mid 80’s during the day, with overnight lows often dropping into the upper 50’s and low 60’s overnight. During the winter months, however, temperatures drop drastically; daily highs during the depths of the cold only reach about freezing, with overnight lows often dropping into the low teens and single digits are not exactly unheard of in Joliet. Snowfall during the winter is also high, though it does not see as much snow as other parts of Illinois, it is still fairly pertinent and can cause delays for carriers trying to get in and out of Joliet.
