Jersey City is a city in as well as the county seat of Hudson County, New Jersey, and is currently the second-largest city in New Jersey by population, behind Newark, with a population of over 247,000 residents. Jersey City is officially a part of the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area, also known as the New York Metro Area and sits just across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan in New York City. Located just southwest of the largest metropolitan area in the United States, Jersey City’s economy easily revolves around New York and all that it has to offer, though Jersey City is also a port of entry into the United States and a major transportation hub in the area; it is one of the largest transportation termini on the east coast in terms of total volume.
The area that is now Jersey City has been populated by Europeans since the early 17th century, with a charter dating back to 1630 for lands that would eventually form Jersey City and Hoboken, New Jersey, but Jersey City proper didn’t actually form until it was incorporated in 1820. A formal census of the city was not taken until 1840; at the time, it was home to over 3,000 residents. Jersey City became a manufacturing and transportation/warehousing locus in the New York area, and by the 1930’s was home to over 310,000 residents. Deindustrialization during the subsequent decades, particularly after the end of World War II, as well as the rise of suburban living and the Interstate Highway System, led to a systematic decline of Jersey City’s population that has only recently been staunched, thanks in particular to city leaders working hard on urban revitalization and limiting urban blight in affected ares of the city.
During the summer months, average highs in Jersey City tend to reach into the low-to-mid 80’s, with generally high humidity that can make for muggy summer days despite the lower-than-usual summer temperatures. Overnight lows tend to cool off significantly, with highs reaching into the low-to-mid 60’s. Urban Jersey City can see higher temperatures than the outskirts, due to the urban heat effect, which can make it seem hotter in the downtown and more congested areas than it really is. Winter months tend to be much colder, with average highs reaching into the upper 30’s and lower 40’s and overnight lows falling into the mid-to-upper 20’s. Snow is not incredibly common, but also not unheard of, so watch the weather reports during the winter months and try to avoid the snows.
