The City of Henderson is a city located in Clark County, Nevada, and is currently home to a population of over 270,000 residents, making it the second-largest city in the state of Nevada, after Las Vegas. Henderson is a part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is the largest metro area in the state, and the city today is one of the most affluent in the entire region. Henderson has been declared as the second-safest city in the United States, despite sitting so close to “Sin City” – this is due to its affluence, as well as its focus on catering to its residents’ needs and also the high median income in the city.
Henderson began as a small town after the construction of the Hoover Dam and the building of the Basic Magnesium Plant. The city grew into one of the largest suppliers of magnesium in the entire United States, and supplied much of the magnesium used by Allied forces during World War II. By 1947, though, magnesium demand for military use diminished, and over 14,000 residents – and workers of the plant – moved away. With concerns over its abandonment, the state of Nevada bought the land from the Federal government, and began the process of re-industrializing the area. By 1953, population levels were up, and the city was incorporated. Henderson’s population has risen with the growth of nearby Las Vegas, and can attribute much of its wealth to the wealth and growth of its larger neighbor.
Located in the desert, it’s not uncommon to see daily summer highs reach into the triple digits. In fact, average highs in July are in the low 100’s, with the record being a paltry 117 degrees Fahrenheit. Nighttime cools down a bit, with average lows dropping down into the mid-to-upper 70’s. During the winter months, average highs usually peak in the upper 50’s, though record highs of 86 degrees in February have been recorded. Overnight lows in the winter usually fall into the low-to-mid 40’s, and snow is almost unheard of in the area. This makes car shipping much easier, as does the fact that Las Vegas sits just next door.
